MOTIV’S CIC STATEMENT

PART 1 – GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT

At MOTIV, we believe that every child has the right to the best possible start in life. We are an award-winning organisation that works with primary and secondary schools to improve attendance and raise children’s aspirations – easily, effectively and sustainably. Our two main areas of activity are:

The MOTIV 100% Challenge.
Here, we challenge pupils to get to school on time, every day. Pupils receive exclusively designed badges at each half-term if they do so, and receive a reward tailored to their year group and their school if they complete a full term. We operate the Challenge on two levels: 100% attendance and 100% effort for attendance. This dual approach celebrates the achievements of everyone, from hard-working, responsible pupils to those who make a significant effort to improve their attendance record. Pupils appreciate this system; for them, it feels fair – and that motivates them.

The MOTIV 100% Experience.
This is a pupil reward programme with a difference. During each ‘experience’, we give secondary-age pupils exclusive access to organisations that they wouldn’t normally come into contact with, from days out at football clubs, technology start-ups and TV studios to manufacturing companies and even live music venues. While they’re there, pupils learn new skills – and discover just what kinds of careers could be available to them. The MOTIV 100% Experience drives home the message that attending school and learning is not only worth it today – it leads to satisfying, fulfilling lives tomorrow.

The communities we serve through these activities are:

Primary and secondary school pupils. So much of a child’s future is determined by one thing: how consistently they attend school. A quarter of children who don’t make it to school regularly, for example, leave school without any qualifications. The unique dual approach of The 100% Challenge motivates children regardless of background or academic ability; it helps them understand the importance of attending lessons; it instils in them a work ethic that they will carry with them throughout their lives; and it ensures they learn the social skills that can only be picked up by attending school day in, day out. The 100% Experience, meanwhile, raises realistic aspirations among secondary school pupils by exposing them to jobs and industries that they may otherwise not come into contact with. By immersing them in a ‘real world’ business environment, The 100% Experience equips pupils with skills that can’t be learned solely in the classroom, and cements the work ethic first explored in The 100% Challenge.

Schools, education providers and local authorities. MOTIV offers a highly cost effective and successful attendance programme for education providers. We understand the needs of schools and deliver tailor-made, practical materials are distributed direct to pupils and families. These materials build on existing attendance programmes and deliver impressive results for very little additional work. We also have a thorough understanding of the changing world of 14-19 education, and give education providers a means of teaching transferable skills, developing long-term relationships with businesses and delivering new forms of out-of-classroom learning. We use our extensive commercial experience and the tools at our disposal (such as music, sport, TV, radio and fashion) to create real excitement among children about the possibilities that school affords them – something that schools alone would struggle to generate. Our experience of corporate brands also means that we can negotiate the kind of sponsorship that individual education providers would find difficult to match. Not only that, but because we are a social enterprise, we are driven by a genuine desire to ensure our corporate partners work with schools to improve the lives of school children.

Parents and carers. MOTIV works closely with education providers to communicate direct with parents and carers so that they understand the full implications of their child missing lessons, no matter how casual or infrequent. We do this through a variety of means, such as producing a range of easy-to-understand materials for families. We also use a version of ‘pester power’ to get parents on board by developing a programme that the child actively wants to be a part of. On top of this, we acknowledge the effort it takes to get a child to school on time every day and have developed a range of unique ‘whole family’ rewards to celebrate a child’s achievement in response. Rewards such as family days out at theme parks or meals at a family restaurant are designed to change the culture of attendance not just in the classroom but at home, too.

Corporate partners. At MOTIV, we consider the corporate sector as much a ‘community’ as any other. As well as creating successful, targeted and ethical marketing campaigns, we provide them with an opportunity to give something meaningful and lasting back to local communities.
