Chefs from YO! Sushi were on hand at Berridge Junior School in Nottingham yesterday to talk to pupils about how important it is to develop good punctuality as a life skill. The creative demonstration was in celebration of the improvements in punctuality the school has made as part of The Attendance Challenge.

Over 20,000 Nottingham school pupils took part in the Attendance Challenge, resulting in a 7% overall improvement in 100% attendance during the spring term, which in real terms is over 4,000 more lessons attended compared to the same time last year.

Schools that have seen remarkable improvements include Welbeck Primary School which saw 77.72% improvement in the numbers of children making 100% attendance whilst at Fernwood Comprehensive School 100% attendance improved by 34%.

sushi2The MOTIV Attendance Challenge which ran from January until April in 73 schools recognised both excellence and significant improvements in school attendance, rewarding school attendance in two categories – 100% attendance and 100% effort in attendance.

As well as increasing full attendance in Spring Term across the city, schools like Berridge Junior have utilised the Challenge resources to give attendance and punctuality a strong and high profile message within the school. The Challenge also improved engagement between families and schools and raised motivation levels of pupils.

Head teacher Bryan Mallows commented: “Pupils have been working on sketches based on attendance and punctuality and to bring these to life we have invited YO! Sushi Chefs to talk about the importance of good punctuality and apply their scenarios to the world of work.”

sushi3The Attendance Challenge has been supported by a number of local sponsors including Nottingham Forest Football Club, TenPin Bowling, Nando’s Restaurant, Making it! Discovery Centre, The National Space Centre and YO! Sushi.

“The Attendance Challenge is not just about statistics and short term gains but a long term message about developing life skills that acknowledges the importance of commitment and attendance in all works of professional and social life. MOTIV have built a range of unique relationships with brands such as YO! Sushi in producing The Attendance Challenge, creating a positive association and involvement that connects directly with pupils in both primary and secondary schools”
